Alliance battles? - Guild Wars Forums

Excuse my lack of knowledge and game terms, but I have a question about 'alliance battles'

When people refer to these, do they mean such markers on the map as "Fort Aspenwood" or "The Jade Quarry"? or is it something else?

I've heard people say Alliance battles are only accessible from someone in the guild hall, but I cannot travel to mine.

One more question, must you be in an 'alliance' to participate?
